Playing Erio and the Electric Doll: what actually works
I spent about six hours getting this to run smoothly on a few different machines. The game itself is a narrative puzzle title with hand-drawn visuals and an electro-mechanical aesthetic. It's not exactly heavy on system requirements, but that doesn't mean it runs cleanly out of the box on every setup. There are a few known issues and some settings you need to change before you even start playing.

Download it from the usual storefronts. Steam, GOG, whatever you prefer. The installer is straightforward but the game seems to have trouble with certain Windows permission states. When it first launches, create a shortcut and right-click it. Properties, Compatibility tab, and check "Run this program as an administrator." That fixes most of the crash-on-start issues I've seen across forums and Discord servers. Don't skip this step even if you think your account has admin rights. Windows still sandboxes the game folder differently for some games. Once it launches, go into Settings right away. Set the resolution to match your monitor's native resolution, not a recommended option. The game includes upscaled UI elements that look noticeably pixelated at non-native resolutions. Frame rate target should be set to VSync or 60fps capped. Uncapped framerates cause timing issues in a couple of puzzle sequences where speed-based inputs are required. I hit this on a 144hz display and missed two puzzles because the input windows felt off.
The game has an autoload feature that saves after each puzzle room. I found it reliable enough that I stopped making manual saves manually. The autosave file is stored in AppData\Roaming\ErioElectricDoll\Saves. If the game crashes, you can copy those save files to a backup folder and paste them back after a reinstall. I did this after a Windows Update wiped my game directory. Saved me about forty minutes of progress. Audio can be spotty on some systems. If you're getting cutouts or silence during cutscenes, switch the audio output from "Default" to your actual playback device in the audio settings. The default auto-detect doesn't always pick the right one, especially if you're using USB headsets or Bluetooth audio. This is a known issue that hasn't been patched yet according to the dev's latest status post.

Performance-wise, the game runs on Unity. It's not well optimized for multi-GPU setups. If you have an NVIDIA card with Optimus or a hybrid laptop, make sure the game is set to use your dedicated GPU in the NVIDIA Control Panel or Windows Graphics Settings. Running on integrated graphics causes frame drops during the more detailed puzzle sequences. I measured a drop from roughly 55fps to around 28fps when it defaulted to the integrated chip. One other thing people miss: the game supports controller input but the keyboard mapping is incomplete. If you're playing with a gamepad, some menu navigation has to be done with the keyboard anyway. The movement keys are hardcoded to WASD in the menu screens. So if you want a clean experience, get comfortable switching between controller and keyboard mid-game. It's not ideal but it's what the current build offers.
If you run into the black screen on startup after the second launch, delete the preferences.cfg file in the game install directory. The first launch generates it correctly but subsequent launches sometimes write corrupted data to it. Deleting it forces a fresh generation. This took me three tries to figure out. The official FAQ doesn't mention it. The puzzles themselves are well-designed. No cheap difficulty spikes, just a gradual introduction of mechanics. The electric doll companion gives you hints if you're stuck for more than a few minutes, but the hint system is easy to miss because it only triggers after a delay. Some players think the game is broken because hints don't appear immediately. They do, just not right away. Patience pays off here.
The ending feels complete but there's a post-credits puzzle room that's easy to overlook. It requires solving a sequence that references three earlier puzzles. If you missed any of those, you'll need to backtrack through saves or replay sections. I recommend making manual saves at the start of each major area. The autosave won't always catch the transition points cleanly. I don't have anything else to add. The game is solid, runs fine once you get past the initial setup friction, and the puzzles are worth the effort. Just remember the compatibility workaround and the audio settings. Those two things alone will save you from the most common problems.
