Building a Solo Necromancer in Dark Souls 3 Actually Works, But You Need to Expect Certain Things
I picked up a necromancy build after getting absolutely wrecked by every boss on NG+4 as a straight strength build. I was tired of learning frame data and button timing. The idea was simple: let the corpses do the work while I stand behind them and watch. It works. It works very well. It also has some real headaches you won't find in most guides. The core concept of ler solo necromancy revolves around building a character that summons multiple NPCs and reanimates corpses during combat. Instead of trading blows with bosses, you're playing a very passive support role that just happens to be the damage dealer through its summons. The build centers on high Intelligence and Faith stats to unlock the heavy summoning spells.
ler solo necromancy Build Requirements and Starting Point
You start as a Pyromancer or Professed if you want the early spells right away, but the Hero origin gives you the best raw stats for the investment curve. Here is what I actually leveled through to 150: 40 Intelligence, 35 Faith, 30 Attunement, and then dumped everything else into Vigor 35 for survivability. Strength and Dexterity stay at 10. You do not need them. Your weapon is entirely secondary. The staff you want is the Staff of the Nothing. It scales with both Intelligence and Faith, which means you are not forced to choose one primary stat. I learned this the hard way after wasting twelve soul levels on a pure Int build that did pathetic damage with my summoning spells. The Staff of the Nothing comes from the Dreg Heap area, near where you fight the First Demon. Go get it early.
The Spells You Actually Need and Where to Find Them
Here is the spell loadout that works. Any guide will tell you something different, but this is what survived my testing across eighty plus hours: Soul Gemchild is your first summon. It is weak but it gives you an extra body. Get it from the Undead Parish after defeating the Bell Gargoyles. It costs only 6 attunement slots and appears almost instantly.
Dead Font is a area denial spell that damages enemies standing on corpses. Yes, even your own summon's corpses count. This combo is important. I set up Dead Font zones in boss arenas before engaging, then summon Soul Gemchildren into the damaged areas. The multiplicative damage output surprised me. It works against most mid-tier bosses without needing direct attacks. Soul Surgebloom is the heavy hitter. It explodes corpses in a wide radius. This is where solo necromancy becomes genuinely scary. Get it from Lady Yuria of Londor after completing her questline. It consumes 3 attunement slots per cast, so you have to manage your slot count carefully.
Soul of Yorshka, obtained from Yorshka in Irithyll, summons a large spirit that tanks damage and draws aggro. This is your main combatant. Pair it with Dead Font and you effectively have two damage sources plus a tank. Most bosses will focus Yorshka while your other summons chip away at it. Revenant and its variant, Great Revenant, come from Yuria's questline as well. These reanimate specific corpse spots on the map. Use them in areas with predictable enemy placement. They are excellent for farming but less useful in boss fights where there are no corpses to begin with.

The One Problem Nobody Talks About
Attunement slots are your real bottleneck. Every spell you equip takes up slots. You start with 4 and can increase to 10 with certain talismans. I ran into a specific wall during the Pontiff Sulyvahn fight. My build used Soul Surgebloom, Dead Font, and Soul of Yorshka simultaneously. That took up 7 slots. I had no room for any defensive buff spell or extra healing item infusion. When Yorshka died mid-fight, I had no way to resummon because I could not fit another Soul of Yorshka into my remaining slots. The workaround was straightforward: I swapped to the Pearl Pearl talisman, which gives 2 additional attunement slots. I bought it from the Bell Keeper in Irithyll for a significant amount of souls. This gave me 12 total slots. I then dropped Soul Surgebloom temporarily during the Pontiff fight and brought it back for later bosses where the open space allowed safer reanimation cycles. It meant managing your spell rotation mid-dungeon rather than having everything available at once. That adjustment alone cut my average boss clear time from about 25 minutes to roughly 8 minutes on subsequent attempts.
Another issue is that corpse consumption resets when you leave an area. I wasted at least three hours re-summoning Revenants after fast-traveling because I forgot the corpses despawned. Check your current area for available corpse spawns before committing to a spell rotation. The Dreg Heap has the highest density of usable corpses in the game. Farm there first to understand the spacing mechanics.
What This Build Struggles With
Bosses that kill your summons instantly will leave you sitting there doing nothing. Ornstein and Smough from the original Dark Souls remake in DS3 are one example. The Dragonlord Ordrellas is another. When your Yorshka dies in two hits and you have no backup summon ready, you are relying entirely on the damage from Dead Font and Soul Surgebloom alone, which is insufficient against many late game bosses without proper upgrades. The Staff of the Nothing requires both Intelligence and Faith investment. This means you are never maxing either stat completely. Your spell scaling will plateau earlier than a pure Int or pure Faith build would. Expect about 30 percent less raw damage output on your spells compared to those specialized builds. The tradeoff is that you get both summoning and damage spells from a single stat investment, which simplifies leveling significantly.
If you want a more direct damage approach, consider a pure spellblade build using Crystal Stones or a standard Int sorcery build instead. The necromancy route is not for everyone. It requires patience and a willingness to play passively. Some people find it boring after the novelty wears off. That is a legitimate critique.
Quick Implementation Steps
Finish the Yuria questline first to unlock Soul Surgebloom and Yorshka summon. Level to 40 Int and 35 Faith. Acquire the Staff of the Nothing from the Dreg Heap. Equip the Pearl Pearl talisman for extra attunement slots. Run through the Dreg Heap area three or four times practicing corpse placement with Dead Font before attempting any major boss. This practice period takes about 45 minutes and will save you several hours of failed boss runs. The build is functional and genuinely viable for solo play through most of the game. It is not a magic bullet. Some bosses will still take longer than they should because you are waiting for corpse spawn timers and attunement slot management. But for players who would rather think strategically about positioning and resource management than react to boss attack patterns in real time, it is a solid choice.
